An award-winning adaptive reuse development, 400,000 s.f. of factory space was transformed into 110 loft condominiums in the heart of downtown Cincinnati. Working seamlessly with the developer, architect, contractors, and owners, A. Maris Bernard imprinted a unique sense of “home” adjacent to Lytle Park.
The Gerdsen Company is well established in the multi-family housing market, and features units that offer quiet, comfortable, apartment and townhouse living. Yet, there was not a permanent sign in front of the signature property in the gaslight district of Clifton, a picturesque walkable neighborhood near the University of Cincinnati and major medical facilities. Working with the owner to both re-brand and establish an identity for the new web site, A. Maris Bernard designed the exterior sign for in front of the Admiral Apartments, and oversaw the construction and installation
A market-rate apartment community constructed near Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 2009, this “big house” style development features an exceptional two-story clubhouse for tenant use, as well as leasing/property management functions. A. Maris Design created both exterior and interior design for the facility, including the exterior pool, pergola, and outdoor fireplace, integrating them into the landscape and adjacent bike path.
Styling a model using local retailers and artists, in combination with readily accessible products from the resources available to the prospective tenant, turns an ‘anywhere USA’ apartment into a great home. “I try to put myself in the shoes of the person who is still considering if this is where he/she want to live – what will be the feature I can highlight to create a moment where that person will decide to sign a lease.”
This award-winning model home was designed with the empty-nester female head-of-household in mind. Since home purchases are often made by one person, the design of the interior featured many elements that would appeal to a woman, perhaps a widow, downsizing but wanting all the features of a traditional residence. Upgraded features are sparingly but effectively incorporated into this study, such as the chair rail highlighted by the lime green wall color and stark white trim, while using a standard carpet and light fixtures.
Designed for a new home in the 1980’s, this kitchen was featured in a Procter and Gamble advertisement for a Betty Crocker contest. A classic French Country Kitchen provided the effect that the advertising agency was seeking, a “cooks” kitchen with warmth and upgraded amenities, which at the time included a trash compacter, custom doors on the refrigerator, and the stainless steel drain board for the sink. The effect of the wall covering on the walls and ceiling, and matching fabric for the cafe curtains, added the impact that helped them visually express the type of kitchen that a…
While with the Miller-Valentine Company, A Maris designed this market-rate apartment community in Concord, NC. In addition to the design, A Maris managed the purchasing and scheduling of furniture, art, and accessories from both local and catalog sources. Due to rigid time constraints, all furniture and furnishings were ordered and shipped to arrive simultaneously from multiple sources and set up in a 3-day period of time for the grand opening. Paint colors represent the accent colors available to tenants as part of the unique leasing package offered.
This award-winning interior design (ASID design awards, 2010) was provided by A. Maris Bernard, while at Miller Valentine, for a “resort style active adult community . . . ideal for independent living people . . . who want to enjoy life to the fullest in the comfort and familiarity of a neighborhood . . .” The entrance pergola was envisioned as a “front porch” for the residents, also offering another social space on beautiful days.
“A New York Loft.” This was the request of this couple, transplanted from the east coast via suburbia. With a superb collection of contemporary art and sculpture, along with unique furniture and a baby grand piano, this empty-nester high profile couple specifically selected a condominium on the lowest floor of the building in the corner, overlooking the treetops and park. A. Maris Bernard conceived of a floor plan that transformed a typical unit into a 3-bedroom with study, music room, and gallery. The powder room incorporated an antique family mirror, with repetition in the circular, glass vessel bowl on…
